SARS-C0V-2 Sewage Testing
Points to Consider:
Studies have indicated that testing wastewater allows for assessing the presence and spread of Covid-19 infection in a population.
Municipal wastewater is considered to be a rich source of data about community health. Globally, numerous efforts are underway to monitor wastewater for SARS-CoV-2.
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has proven to be a useful tool to monitor communities for other viruses including poliovirus, hepatitis A and norovirus. WBE can be more scalable than individual testing providing a leading indicator of community spread which is critical to preventative efforts.
Exact Scientific methodically validates each and every run to ensure the integrity of the results.
Why Monitor?
By monitoring sewage, SARS-CoV-2 can be found up to three days in advance of symptoms. Sewage testing allows for detection of asymptomatic infected people, along with infected people. For larger municipalities, a background study is done to establish a normal positive baseline. From there monitoring is done at an regular interval to watch for increases that go above the established baseline.
For small towns, boats, schools or businesses, if the initial sample tests negative, any following sample that tests positive will indicate a potential issue. By monitoring boat pump-outs or isolating sewage from small populations, positive tests can prevent an outbreak.
Who Should Monitor

- Wastewater Treatment Plant – Lift Stations
- Boat Fleets
- Schools & Universities
- Business – Manufacturing Plants
- Nursing Homes
- Hospitals
